By default, a recipient can invite other people to a document from the signing page. If a document is only meant for the people you sent it to, you can switch that off. You can set it on a single document, on a template so everything built from it inherits the rule, or as the default for your whole account. This article covers all three, what your recipient sees, and what the setting does not cover.
Where you can set it
There are three places to set recipient sharing, and they work together:
Account default — sets the starting position for new documents and templates across your account.
Template — everything created from that template inherits the template's setting.
Single document — applies to that document only.
The most specific setting wins. A template's setting takes precedence over the account default, and a document's own setting takes precedence over both.
How to prevent recipients from inviting others
Open the document and go to Settings.
Stay on the General tab and scroll to Recipient sharing.
Switch on Prevent recipients from inviting others.
Select Save.
Pro-tip
Set this before you send. Once a document has been sent, the setting can no longer be changed, so decide while the document is still in draft.
Set it on a template
If some of your documents should always be closed to new people and others shouldn't, set the rule on the template rather than on each document.
Open the template and go to Settings.
On the General tab, scroll to Recipient sharing.
Switch on Prevent recipients from inviting others.
Select Save.
Every document created from that template inherits the setting. This is useful when you have a mix of document types. An NDA may be fine to pass around, while a proposal with your pricing in it is not.
Documents created from a template through the API or a CRM integration, Salesforce included, inherit the setting in the same way. The rule is enforced on our servers rather than only hidden in the interface, so it holds even when a document is created outside the app.
Set the default for your whole account
If most of your documents should be closed to new people, set it once at account level instead of per document.
Go to Settings → Document Settings.
Find Signing Settings.
Switch on Prevent recipients from inviting others.
New documents and templates start with recipient sharing prevented.
What your recipient sees
When the setting is off, the signing page shows an Invite button. Your recipient can open Invite recipient, fill in the new person's details, and add them to the document.
When the setting is on, the Invite button is not shown. Your recipient only sees the option to Change signer, and cannot add anyone to the document.
What this setting does not do
It does not stop someone forwarding the link by email. The setting removes the ability to invite people from inside the document. It cannot stop a recipient from forwarding the signing link to someone else. If it matters that only a specific person can open the document, pair this with SMS or OTP verification on the recipient.
It does not affect signature transfer. Allow signature transfer is a separate setting, on the Signing tab under Recipient signing settings. It is on by default. If you leave it on, your recipient can still hand signing rights to someone else using Change signer, even with recipient sharing prevented. Switch it off as well if you need the original signer to be the only person who can sign. See Understanding document settings for how signature transfer works.
Limitations
The setting cannot be changed after a document has been sent.
It does not prevent a recipient from forwarding the signing link by email.
It does not affect Allow signature transfer, which is controlled separately on the Signing tab.
